What is Women’s Health?

Women’s health is a specialised area of physiotherapy which focus’ on the pelvic area of the female body. Women’s health is different to Men’s Health, as the female pelvic anatomy is different to the male pelvic anatomy and therefore the assessment requirements and qualifications are different.

 

Who is it suitable for?

Women’s Health can be useful for women of all ages who have any of the conditions mentioned below.

Conditions treated?

-           Incontinence (both bladder and/or bowel)

-           Pelvic floor muscle weakness and/or overactivity

-           Pelvic and vulva pain

-           Pregnancy related pain in and around the pelvis / pelvic girdle (PGP/PPGP)

-           Rectus diastasis abdominis (RDA)

-           Pelvic organ prolapse (POP)

-           Menopause / perimenopause related symptoms

-           Pelvic post operative management

-           Sexual disfunction 

-           Conditions associated with menstruation (Inc. PCOS, amenorrhea, menorrhagia)

 

How is treatment carried out?

There are various treatment methods covered within Women’s health and your physiotherapist will always discuss and explain what is appropriate for you as an individual. 

 

Treatments can include: 

-           Hands on soft tissue release work

-           Joint mobilisation

-           Acupuncture

-           Exercise rehabilitation 

 

A combination of modalities is usually used to achieve the best possible outcomes.
